Planting Pace Catching Up to Five-Year Averages

The amounts of corn, soybeans, and sorghum planted approached five-year averages this past week as farmers took advantage of warmer temperatures and drier conditions.

According to Monday's Crop Progress Report, by the USDA, 72% of the corn crop is planted (compared to an average of 79%), 50% of soybeans (55%) and 33% of sorghum (36%).

As for spring wheat, 49% of the crop is planted in six selected states compared to a five-year average of 83%.

Winter wheat crop quality continues to be rated at less than 30% good/excellent compared a 47% rating achieved by the crop last eyar at this point in the season.
