Forest Stand Improvement Workshop and Tour Sept. 29 in Van Buren
Missouri Ag Connection - 09/24/2018

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and The Nature Conservancy partner to present a Forest Stand Improvement Workshop and Tour Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. in Van Buren. The workshop will introduce the many benefits of forest stand improvement and showcase how one local landowner achieved her goals to improve forest health and diversity using cost-share opportunities.

"We're fortunate to have strong conservation partnerships that enable us to host workshops like this," said Devin Wood, MDC private lands conservationist. "We hope many local landowners will take advantage of this opportunity to learn how conservation practices can work for them and their land."

The event is free and open to the public with lunch provided. Attendees can expect to learn how to improve the health of forest and wooded areas, wildlife habitat and timber quality. Cost-share opportunities to help offset the cost of these practices will also be shared.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. with presentations at the Carter County Senior Center, located at 16 Ball Park Road in Van Buren. In the afternoon, the group will visit private property, where the landowner has implemented forest stand improvement in several places.

Participants should call Chad Doolen, NWTF, at (573) 270-0316 by Sept. 27 to reserve a seat. For more information about cost-share opportunities and private land assistance, go online to www.mdc.mo.gov/property.
