Dairy Team Launches Spanish Newsletter

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach dairy team has been proactive in bringing education to Spanish-speaking employees in the agricultural industry over the past several years.
This has included on-farm training, videos and resources for working in dairies. While sharing these resources, the team found that a focus on life skills in Spanish was also needed to help the two cultures understand and prosper in these changing times.
dairy cattle eating.That idea evolved into partners across the communities joining together to provide a bi-monthly newsletter in Spanish to bring timely and topical information to employees and their families.
The "Latinos Trabajando en Siouxland/Celebración de Vida" newsletter has been distributed to employers in northwest Iowa for placement on breakroom tables and throughout local businesses. It is also available as a free download at https://www.extension.iastate.edu/dairyteam/hispanic-resources.
While producers use the dairy team's Spanish videos and brochures to teach professional skills, this newsletter will address life skills for employees working in a new culture, according to Fred Hall, dairy specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach.
"The dairy team is excited to expand our reach to Spanish-speaking employees in the food-producing and handling industries," said Hall. "By working with employers to make the newsletter available on break room tables, we hope it develops conversations on topics that will help blend the two cultures in the workplace."
In addition to the ISU Extension and Outreach dairy team and human sciences team, Iowa Legal Aid and Head Start are partners who have provided information for the first issue. Other community service providers are encouraged to become partners and can do so by contacting Fred Hall, dairy specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, at 712-737-4230 or fredhall@iastate.edu. Iowa agricultural or other industry employers with Spanish-speaking employees can be added to the mailing list by contacting ISU Extension and Outreach Sioux County at 712-737-4230.
