NASS Reports Missouri October Crop Forecast

Corn: Planted area is estimated at 3.50 million acres, up 3 percent from the previous forecast and up 3 percent from last year. Harvested area, forecast at 3.35 million acres, is up 3 percent from the previous forecast and up 3 percent from 2017. Based on October 1 conditions, the Missouri corn yield is forecast at 142 bushels per acre, up 4 bushels from last month but down 28 bushels from 2017. Production is forecast at 476 million bushels, 14 percent below last year's production.

Soybeans: Planted area is estimated at 5.85 million acres, down 2 percent from last year. Harvested area, forecast at 5.78 million acres, is down 2 percent from 2017. Based on October 1 conditions, the Missouri soybean yield is forecast at 48 bushels per acre, down 1.5 bushels from 2017. Production is forecast at 277 million bushels, down 5 percent from 2017.

Cotton: Planted area is estimated at 325,000 acres, up 7 percent from 2017. Harvested area, forecast at 320,000 acres, up 8 percent from last year. The cotton yield is forecast at 1,245 pounds per acre, up 15 pounds from last month and up 33 pounds from 2017. If realized, this would be the highest yield on record. Production is forecast at 830,000 bales (480-pound), up 11 percent from the previous year.

Rice: Planted area, estimated at 224,000 acres, is up 33 percent from 2017. Harvested area is forecast at 219,000 acres, is up 37 percent from last year. Based on October 1 conditions, the Missouri rice yield is forecast at 7,000 pounds per acre, unchanged from the previous forecast but down 440 pounds per acre from 2017. Production is forecast at 15.3 million cwt, up 29 percent from last year.

Alfalfa hay: Harvested area, forecast at 330,000 acres, is up 10 percent from 2017. Based on October 1 conditions, the Missouri alfalfa hay yield is forecast at 2.20 tons per acre, down 0.20 tons from the previous year. Production is forecast at 726,000 tons, up 1 percent from 2017.

Other hay: Harvested area, forecast at 3.20 million acres, is up 19 percent from 2017. Based on October 1 conditions, the Missouri other hay yield is forecast at 1.40 tons per acre, down 0.55 ton from last year. Production is forecast at 4.48 million tons, 15 percent below 2017.
