Missouri Ag Connection - 02/08/2016

Past participants and other individuals interested in the Missouri Show-Me-Select Beef Heifer Replacement Program are invited to an informational meeting starting at 7 p.m., Feb. 15 at the University of Missouri Extension conference room inside the Lawrence County Courthouse, Mt. Vernon.

The meeting is designed to update producers about the upcoming May 20 bred heifer sale at Joplin Regional Stockyards and discuss ways to improve the successful program. Genomic testing will be discussed as it pertains to advertising and the new Show-Me-Plus classification.

"Those thinking about entering the SMS program will be able to get a feel for how others have benefited from the program," said Eldon Cole, livestock specialist, University of Missouri Extension.

The program is a non-profit joint effort of SMS Replacement Heifers, Inc., University of Missouri Extension, University of Missouri College of Agriculture Food and Natural Resources, College of Veterinary Medicine, Missouri Cattlemen's Association and the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

The SMS program began in 1996 with the first sale held in November 1997 at Joplin Regional Stockyards. To date, there have been 8,553 heifers sold at 33 sales in southwest Missouri for a total of $12,623,657.
