94th Lawrence Co. Soils and Crops Conference Jan. 4
Missouri Ag Connection - 12/18/2017

The 94th annual Lawrence County Soils and Crops Conference will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Southwest Research Center located at 14548 State Hwy H, southwest of Mt. Vernon.

"This long-running conference will look at solutions to address common production and farm management issues on area farms. The information will provide 'tried and true' management tools to support local farmers who feed the rest of us," said Tim Schnakenberg, an agronomy specialist with University of Missouri Extension in Galena.

The first presentation on the program will address pasture rental arrangements for livestock producers and landowners.

"This topic is of interest to many who are in the position of developing fair and sound arrangements for rental agreements when raising cattle," said Jim Spencer, the MU Extension agriculture business that will lead the discussion.

Tim Schnakenberg, MU Extension agronomy specialist from Galena, will discuss how to take your forage program to the next level.

"We will discuss options when deciding to do more than just using Kentucky 31 fescue as the sole forage when pasturing cattle," said Schnakenberg.

A farmer panel with four area livestock producers will be on hand who have had success with improved forage options such as the use of novel fescue varieties, bermudagrass and alfalfa.

A meal is provided courtesy of Mid-Missouri Bank of Mt. Vernon, Ozark Electric Cooperative, Southwest Missouri Cattlemen's Association and Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce.

There is a small charge of $5 to attend in order to cover program costs. Attendees need to preregister by Jan. 2 with the Lawrence County Extension Center by calling 417-466-3102 to reserve a meal. Space is limited so early registration insures a meal and a seat.
