Missouri Ag Connection - 03/15/2018

The College of the Ozarks Agriculture Department hosted a National FFA Workshop for high school students.

The workshop is an opportunity for high school students to further develop their critical thinking and leadership skills, while sharpening their contest abilities. It is also a valued opportunity for the College's students to share the knowledge and skills they have gained through their education and work experiences on campus.

The event included workshops presented by College of the Ozarks students on dairy foods, dairy cattle evaluation, livestock evaluation, agronomy, floriculture, entomology, meat evaluation and identification, soils, poultry evaluation, forestry, nursery/landscaping, equine evaluation, creed speaking, division 1 and 2 public speaking, extemporaneous speaking, and advanced prepared public speaking.

"Being a part of this workshop is an honor," said Jessica Orphan, sophomore nutrition and dietetics major. "Providing the students this experience has also been beneficial for me because I have been able to see all the diverse areas within agriculture. The hands-on experience helps the high school students not only with FFA but future endeavors as well."

Academic advisors and current students were available during the FFA Workshop to discuss the College's agriculture program.

The agriculture department offers major emphases in the areas of agriculture business, animal science, horticulture, agriculture education, agronomy, agriculture development, pre-vet, and wildlife conservation and management.

The workshop brought over 1,600 students from more than 70 schools in southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas regions. Schools from as far as Beebe, Arkansas, and Drexel, Missouri, attended, making this event one of Missouri's largest and farthest reaching high school agriculture functions.
