Food Safety Training for Commercial Producers

"FSMA Food Safety Training," a workshop designed for commercial fruit and vegetable producers, will be held from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Greene County MU Extension office, located inside the Springfield Botanical Center, 2400 S. Scenic Ave.

A registration fee of $50 will be charged to cover the cost of materials, lunch, and expenses for the guest speakers. Contact the Greene County Extension Center at 417-881-8909 for more information. Registration can be done online at and is needed before Jan. 25.

"Now that the FSMA rules for fresh produce are in place, farmers are encouraged to attend this workshop, which will satisfy the mandated training requirement for FSMA compliance," said Patrick Byers, horticulture specialist, University of Missouri Extension.

The FSMA mandated training includes modules on worker health and hygiene, soil amendments, wildlife and domesticated animals, production water, postharvest water, and postharvest handling and sanitation. Additional topics on the meeting agenda include developing a farm food safety plan, including a traceback system.

Partners in the training include University of Missouri Extension, Lincoln University Extension, and the Greene County Commission.
