MU Campus, UM System Resume Normal Operations Today

University of Missouri officials announced Monday that the university will be open tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 15, beginning at 12:01 a.m. for all regularly scheduled operations, including intersession classes. Officials encourage faculty, students, staff and visitors to use caution while traveling on campus as slick spots remain due to the extreme cold temperatures and crews are working to address tree and building damage. Anyone driving to campus should plan ahead, leave early and allow plenty of time for travel. "This storm brought heavy snow, causing damage to nearly a third of Mizzou's trees," said Gary Ward, vice chancellor for operations. "Fallen branches that impede foot traffic or those that cause a hazard overhead are being removed."

Ward cautions that as temperatures rise, snow will slide from some rooftops. As a result, some building entrances and sidewalks may be closed to prevent injury. Everyone on campus is encouraged to wear appropriate footwear and avoid walking along building exteriors where snow melt may occur. Campus sidewalks will be clear, but slick spots will likely remain.

MU Chancellor Alexander N. Cartwright thanked crews who worked throughout the weekend and Monday to return the campus to functionality as quickly as possible and who kept the university's critical functions running.

"Our employees demonstrated yet again their resilience, caring and dedication to Mizzou. We thank them for their service at a time when they were undoubtedly dealing with their own personal impacts of the storm," Cartwright said. "We're also appreciative of the City of Columbia and other institutions in town, including Columbia Public Schools. The strong relationships we have built over the years ensured that we tackled this challenge together."
