Families Can Learn Fishing Fundamentals June 22
Missouri Ag Connection - 06/18/2019

If your desire to take your family fishing is strong, but your experience is weak, don't be discouraged. You can have plenty of fishing fun by sticking to the basics.

Families can learn about the fundamentals of fishing at a free Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) clinic June 22 at the Walter Woods Conservation Area in Newton County. The program, "Discover Nature Families: Fishing 101" is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and is for ages 6 and older.

The program is divided into an indoor and outdoor session. Topics that will be covered during the indoor portion include equipment, knot-tying, baiting a hook, and how to handle fish. Participants will then have an opportunity to fish at a stocked pond at the Walter Woods Area. Equipment will be provided or people may bring their own fishing gear. All participants 16 years of age and older need to have a valid Missouri fishing permit. No organized groups, please. People can register at: https://mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/167872

People can call for more information about this program or other MDC programs in the Joplin area by calling MDC's Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center at 417-629-3434.

To get to Walter Woods Conservation Area, take Newton County Highway NN south from Redings Mill for 1.25 miles, then turn west on Dutch Elm Drive, which leads to the area.
