MAbA Class Holds First Virtual Engage Session

The Missouri Department of Agriculture kicked off the 32nd Annual Missouri Agribusiness Academy. Thirty students chosen through an extensive application and interview process joined Dr. Jim Spain of the University of Missouri for the first session of MAbA Engage, a new virtual take on the academy. Dr. Spain challenged students to think critically and open-mindedly about agricultural advocacy and their roles in bridging the gap between Missouri food and fiber producers and their consumers. Students shared perspectives on agricultural issues and proposed solutions to overcome them.
Since 1988, the Missouri Agribusiness Academy (MAbA) has awarded 960 academy memberships to high school sophomores from six districts across Missouri who express interest in becoming future leaders in agriculture and their communities. To be eligible for the Missouri Agribusiness Academy, students must come from a farming family or be an active member of the National FFA Organization or 4-H. The 2020 MAbA class planned to tour agribusinesses, explore educational opportunities and meet with agricultural leaders in the Kansas City area from June 1-5, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they will instead engage in virtual sessions and explore more socially-distant group activities throughout their year as members.
Other activities students will participate in include more MAbA Engage virtual sessions covering topics such as social media and character strengths, Community Service Day at the Missouri State Fair, Commodity and Legislative Day at the Missouri State Capitol and Missouri Agribusiness Academy Graduation at the Missouri FFA State Convention.
